The mine was named after Andrew Kennedy who is reputed to have found the original quartz about 1863. Kennedy died in 1871 and the mine changed hands several times until Dec. 1886.

Five Bay area men incorporated the Kennedy Mining and Milling Co. and invested enough to keep the mine viable and growing. The facility was closed in late 1942 by government edict and never reopened. The foundation took possession of the property Aug.22,1997. The mine is located on Highway 49 just North of Jackson, California.

The mine tours, which are guided by volunteers, takes visitors up and down the hills on the property. Comfortable walking or hiking shoes are advised . The Kennedy Tailing Wheels Park is located nearby, featuring the remaining tailing wheels that were used to carry the processed rock from the Kennedy Mine to an impound dam. Self-guided tours are available. Tour season runs mid-March through October on weekends only. Admission to the Mine is $5 for adults, $3 for children 6 to 12 years. Special tours and bus tours can be arranged for weekends and off-season. Call the Kennedy Gold Mine office at 223-9542 for more information and directions.
