  • Ione, Amador County (Sacramento St and Church St. Tour)

    This tour begins at the corners of Main Street and Preston Avenue. Continuing west on Main (Sacramento Street) you will see the Ione Grain Mill on your right hand side (Ace Hardware). Continuing down Sacramento Street, the Historic Methodist Church will be on the corner of Sacramento and Marlette. We will bring you back to Main Street here at the end of the tour.

    Ione Grain Mill

    The Ione Grain Mill was on this site in the 1800's. Now this site is an Ace Hardware Store for Ione.

    The Ione grain is one of the oldest in the state. It was built in 1856 by Thomas Rickey. By 1876, it was grinding an average of 3,500 tons of grain, making flour and livestock feed.

    This is the home that George Woolsey lived with his family while doing business in Ione and the surrounding area.

    The old Woolsey Store was on the corner of Buena Vista and Jackson Street

    George Woolsey's store provided goods to the citizens of Ione for a number of years. Woolsey arrived in California in 1856 and set up his first store in partnership with J.P. Palmer at Lancha Plana.

    Community Methodist Church

    The cornerstone of the Community Methodist Church was laid in 1862, and was completed by locally mined and fired brick in 1866. Known as the "Cathedral of the Mother Lode" it is now designated a California Historic Landmark. No. 506.
