  • The Keyes Home, Sutter Creek, California

This photo taken in 1859 around the time that John Keyes married Clara McIntire, who was daughter of Edward and Mary McIntire. He was around 33 yrs of age and she was 18.

John Keyes built the stone building which is the Annex of the American Exchange Hotel now. He passed in 1875 at the age of 48, leaving Clara widowed.

Today this is one of the most recognizable homes on Sutter Creek Main Street. It is now the Sutter Creek Inn. The main part of the home was constructed by John Keyes.

Clara Keyes remarried Edward Voorheis in 1880. In this photo you see Clara and Edward's daughter Gertrude standing on the front porch with her governess. Edward and Clara remodeled the home in 1882.
