Silver Lake House,  a Peter Fagan arrived in Sutter Creek from Canada in 1858. After a stint as engineer for the Eureka mine, Fagan went into the livery business. In about 1882 Fagan purchased the log hostelry at the lake and had commercial enterprises both in Sutter Creek and the Sierra. He and wife Maggie were postmasters during the 1880s and 1890s. The Silver Lake house was about where Kay's resort is today. On the lakeshore and near the lake's outlet.

The Kirkwood Inn. Sources tell that Zack Kirkwood homesteaded or claimed what is Kirkwood meadows today around 1858 in what was then Amador County. The inn itself was built in 1863 or 1864 alongside the new Amador-Nevada wagon road, apparently astride the El Dorado-Amador boundary.
