James Meehan

James Meehan came to America from his native Ireland in 1846. Upon his arrival in California in 1850, he struck out for the mines in Tuolumne County and then moved on to Calaveras County, where he worked alongside the famous sheriff Ben Thorne. In 1854, he married Mary Rawles at Volcano. In 1868 James was elected Amador County Treasurer, serving s such for 11 years.


He also served for four years as Jackson's postmaster and was president of the Society of California Pioneers for 13 years.

James and his wife Mary raised a family of nine children in the home you see pictured here.
